The horse through all its trials has preserved the sweetness of paradise in its blood. ~Johannes Jensen

Horses lend us the wings we lack. ~Author Unknown

I came across these two quotes as I was perusing the web tonight and was struck by how poignant and true they are. Some may consider it overly sentimental, but with each passing day, I am more deeply convinced of the beautiful truth of these feelings. Of course I am increasingly sentimental and gushy with love the more I spend time with Tuff, but it's more than that for me. And I think for anyone who has a heart for animals and horses in particular.

The beauty and grace they display naturally, with little to no effort, is something we can only dream of possessing. The forgiving heart, the accepting nature, the desire to please are all qualities that leave me feeling privileged to be in their presence. Yet so often these selfless creatures are the forgotten, the abandoned, the mistreated. It is a rare and wonderful thing when we find people who hold them in a higher regard - that they have value and a gift to share with anyone who will stop and take a few minutes to watch and listen.

I'm not in it for blue ribbons, the polished coat and braided tail, or any of those things. They're a wonderful bonus if you can be a part of that. But my horse has been at death's door...he's come further than anyone believed he could...and he persevered when everyone around him thought it was time to give up. His heart, courage, and strength made my own seem miniscule in comparison. And he, and so many horses, do it with little expectation of anything in return. Security, food, love and attention are what they hope for. So yes, albeit overtly sentimental, a horse does give you wings. They lift your spirit and soul and carry more than just your physical weight...for a brief time, they carry your burdens and ease your heart. And I'm thankful every day for that.
